Reclaiming Black Music w/ Banjoist Hannah Mayree | Freedom School Online Podcast EP 2

In honor of Black Music Month on June 24, banjoist and educator Hannah Mayree (she/her/they/them) joins Freedom School Online's Summer School to teach the masses about her approaches to reclaiming the Black history behind the banjo within Americana/Folk music.

As a West Coast-based banjoist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist, Hannah will teach a workshop on the instrument's history, original and traditional banjo compositions, and harmonies using acoustic live vocal looping. Her work aims to remind us of the power found in our relationship to the earth, music, and community. Alongside being a musician, Hannah is the founder and creative director of the Black Banjo Reclamation Project, which creates musical, cultural, and land-based opportunities for Black and Afro-Diasporic communities worldwide. The project uses the banjo to reclaim ancestral wisdom and create Afro-futures.
